The sale or supply of ammunition is governed by the NSW Firearms Act, specifically Section 65A.
To purchase longarm ammunition you are required under Section 65A to present your Firearms Licence or other permit that allows you to purchase ammunition, and you may only purchase ammunition for the category of permit or licence to which you are authorised. The dealer must record the details of the sale including the type of ammunition sold, your firearm licence details, and your personal details including your residential address.
To purchase handgun ammunition you are required under Section 65A to present your Firearms Licence or other permit that allows you to purchase ammunition, present your Registration Certificate for the firearm you are purchasing ammunition for, and you may only purchase ammunition for the category of permit or licence to which you are authorised. The dealer must record the details of the sale including the type of ammunition sold, your firearm licence details, the registration number for the firearm, and your personal details including your residential address. If you only have a Category H licence, you must produce your Registration Certificate for all ammunition purchases.
Although Section 65A states that you are required to present your registration certificate for longarm ammunition purchases as well as handgun ammunition, the NSW Firearms Regulations contain an exemption in Part 115A.
Handgun ammunition is defined in Part 115A as ammunition of a calibre that is generally used only in pistols.
